Lola Sandino Stanton was born in Nicaragua and attended Liberal Arts colleges in the US through scholarships. After graduation she worked as a photographer and for most of her working life she wrote, photographed and produced educational materials. Years later she obtained an MA in art education and taught art in NYCity public schools for 13 years.
Even though she is mostly self-taught, after retiring she took classes at The Art Students League and started painting full time. In 2013 she became a member of the National Association of Women Artists. She had her first solo exhibition at The Interchurch Center in NY City in 2017. Lola has exhibited with Taller Boricua, Hunter College Gallery and The Salmagundi Club among others.
Lola favors portraiture in oils. While she is painting a face, she is one with the person, and there is an exhilaration that comes from attaining the details needed to capture the likeness and essence of the subject.
Her next solo exhibition will be of a series of portraits of members of the LGBTQ+ community. The exhibition will take place at The Hudson Guild Gallery in NY City in September, 2026.
Lola has received a number of awards exhibiting with NAWA, including The Nawa Medal of Honor and Best in Show at the Monmouth Museum in NJ. Other awards include the Solveig Stromsoe Palmer Award, The Elizabeth Stanton Blake Award and The Audrey Hope Shirk Memorial Award.
